what should you tolerate at work?

May 15th, 2007

Several years ago when I had a “real” job, I wrote a journal entry about how much and what I was willing to tolerate in a given position before quitting. I’ve long felt that our culture promotes staying at your job despite dissatisfaction, poor pay, lack of respect, or any number of perfectly horrible motivators that are abundant in today’s workforce. This is based on some loyalty or work ethic that has lost any value in my opinion.

So, for your reading pleasure, I’ve decided to post those “deal breakers” here. Keep in mind that these are items I would quit over. That doesn’t mean that you would…or that you should. Remember people; it’s all about DAN.

notes about self-improvement…

May 8th, 2007

NOTE: This post is an old post from MySpace copy/pasted into this one to add content. It is raw and unedited for content or formatting. Love it.

If you know me personally, you know that this topic has been important to me lately. Growth as a person is something I try to direct some time and energy to every year; traditionally during the lenten season. Even though I’m not a Catholic. Just makes sense to me because so many other people are doing the same thing around that time. Anyway, I missed it this year because I was sick, so I’m doing it now.

A conversation with an old friend yesterday yielded some interesting thoughts about becoming a “better” person. Before I explain, I want you to know that my personal views about this are that it’s completely subjective. Solely relevant to us as individuals. I may be better at jigsaw puzzles than you, but I’m not a better person than you. Confucius eat your heart out.

more in my work series (part…3?)

May 8th, 2007

NOTE: This post is an old post from MySpace copy/pasted into this one to add content. It is raw and unedited for content or formatting. Love it.

So I’m too lazy to look back and see what I had called these posts before, but essentially, they are my totally unqualified opinions about how work culture needs to change. Maybe I’ll look later and change the title of this post to match the others.

Probably not.

I read an article over the course of a few days at the gym in Business Week. (personal note…those sit down bikes are AWESOME for readers). The article is about Best Buy and their implementation of a clockless workplace. They call it ROWE, which is a cutesy acronym for “Results Only Work Environment”. If you want some context, you can read the article here, and find out more about ROWE here.

apple = target = genius

May 8th, 2007

NOTE: This post is an old post from MySpace copy/pasted into this one to add content. It is raw and unedited for content or formatting. Love it.

So we just got back from a rousing trip to the Cherry Creek Mall in Denver and while there, we visited the Apple Store. This isn’t my first foray into the mother ship, as I’ve also been to the Apple Store in Chi Town. But it did remind me of some retail and POS Marketing theory of which I’ve recently become aware.

Point of Sale. Not the other POS.

Anyway, here’s the deal. I like to be in the Apple stores. Yes, yes, part of it is due to the fact that Steve Jobs has used mind-altering rays on me and I’m brainwashed into believing that Macs are the messiah’s of the personal computer world. However, there’s more to it than that. Environment, people.

is it wrong that new things make us happy?

May 8th, 2007

NOTE: This post is an old post from MySpace copy/pasted into this one to add content. It is raw and unedited for content or formatting. Love it.

I understand the psychological mumbo jumbo about drawing happiness from collecting crap, and I understand the spiritual stuff about needing more depth to provide long-term spiritual and emotional health. I get it. But seriously, is it so wrong that I find joy in the fact that I’m the proud new owner of an iPod Shuffle?

corporate responsibility (special thanks to kathy sierra)

OK, for those of you who read my Jobs Siggity Suck post, I recently read an article on Kathy Sierra’s Passionate Users blog that articulates what I was trying to say so much better. Why is it that girls always do things better than I do? Anyway, read yonder graph below and see my comments following:

life - v part two

May 8th, 2007

NOTE: This post is an old post from MySpace copy/pasted into this one to add content. It is raw and unedited for content or formatting. Love it.

And here it is. My V for Vendetta reviewish thingamabobby. I don’t normally post true reviews because I don’t normally like reviews, so why would someone want to read mine? Not to mention the fact that many of the films I love are decried by the general public, including my friends, and vise verse. Though I won’t deny my love of many mainstream films as well, so I’m not completely devoid of taste for pop culture.

Simply put…this flick rocked. From an action standpoint: brilliant. From an effects standpoint: brilliant. From a story standpoint: brilliant. It has love, revenge, redemption; everything a good story has. Including a not-so-subtle political message. God, I love Hollywood!

jobs siggity suck

May 8th, 2007

NOTE: This post is an old post from MySpace copy/pasted into this one to add content. It is raw and unedited for content or formatting. Love it.

It’s high time I post my theory about the current workforce culture. Or at least a summary of my theory.

First, you should know that I’m not made of the stuff it takes to work for someone. And by “work for someone”, I’m not talking about my relationship with my clients. I mean being an employee. Frankly, it’s also a flaw, but I just can’t do it. I feel it’s only fair to say this since, well, there may be some cynicism peppered into what I’m about to say. Can anyone be truly objective?

Oh, and this little blurb relates to western culture.

So, keeping that in mind…

the new and improved blog

May 1st, 2007

Well, I’ve made my decision. I choose complicated.

Let’s face it. If I truly didn’t want people to read my stuff - or if I couldn’t care less one way or the other - I wouldn’t blog, I’d journal. Well, I do journal…I also blog. And from now on, I blog on notbadbutgood.com. What made me decide to start a more “official” blog to challenge me to be a better writer and hopefully share useful stuff with more people. It’s more blog-centric (obviously) than MySpace and includes rad tools like posting directly from my phone or email.

So this, my friends will be dangross Blog Central. Read the rest of this entry »
