Google SMS
August 9th, 2007

OK, OK. So I’ve been a little…um…bad about posting regularly. Though I deserve to be flogged and to spend some time in the stocks, I humbly ask for all of your forgiveness and ask that instead, you give comments on my posts. YES, I realize that’s REWARDING me for my naughtiness, but c’mon…be naughty back. It feels good.
I just wanted to drop a quick note about something that I find incredibly useful for looking up information on the fly…Google SMS. Assuming you have an unlimited or nearly unlimited SMS plan for your phone, this is a free service (currently in beta) offered by Google. The concept is simple: you text a question to Google, and it texts you back with the answer.
So far, I’ve used it for directory services, weather, and movie times, but there is so much more potential. You can use it for translation, currency conversion, price quotes, trivia…I just asked it “Who wrote War and Peace?” and it responded with Tolstoy faster than I could have called Dr. Sexton, my college humanities professor. You will rock the effing house at Trivial Pursuit.
The best way to use this is to add a “Google SMS” entry to your phone book with the number “466453″ and just send a text to it when you want to know almost anything. (make sure you look on the Google SMS site for a list of queries) Although I’m afraid that it will not help you find love. Nor help you beat Metroid any faster. But I use it all the time and love it. Give it a try!
