Nothing like a title to make you think you know what I’m going to say about The Shack. The truth is, I liked it…a little.
I’m gonna have to take the wishy washy road on this one and take the “so so” stance on the book that you supposedly love or hate. There actually were parts that I loved, a couple of parts that I hated, but overall, it was a book that left me feeling a little bit bored, a little bit unchanged.
Oh, and warning: SPOILERS BE HAD HERE
The Good
- The Shack pissed off a lot of Christians for being “unscriptural”.
- He went ahead and wrote God in a way that was somewhat unexpected and clearly not the status quo.
- Explored some great concepts like “God loves you, no matter what.” and “Forgiveness is liberating.” and “Aunt Jemimah would make a great God figure. Mmm…pancakes for all eternity.”
The Bad
- Clearly his first novel. Clearly.
- Kinda drags there in the middle. We get it, Mack, why can’t you?
- Despite pushing the limits a little bit, he still wrote very, um, safely.
So go ahead and read it. It might rock your world. You may love it, or you may hate it, or you may be like me. It’s a quick read either way, and if you’re interested in pop culture, you might as well be up on some Christian pop lit.
I for one will not be reading it again, and I was reminded why I avoid reading pop lit to begin with. Too many sentences that end in prepositions. Rookie.
